Bozeman Craftsman Homes

Craftsman Homes are an architectural style, inspired by the American Arts and Crafts movement, which included interior design, landscape design, applied arts, and decorative arts. The Craftsman Home period began in the last years of the 19th century. The architectural style was most widely-used in small-to-medium sized single-family homes from about 1905. The Craftsman style became known alternatively as “bungalow”. Craftsman bungalows are relatively modest. They’re small and easy to care for, which made their design particularly attractive to hardworking homeowners. The style remained popular into the 1930s, and has continued with revival and restoration projects through the Bozeman area.

Craftsman homes have several common features that make them recognisable and popular. In stark contrast to the verticality of Bozeman Victorian Homes, Craftsman homes emphasise horizontal lines, with low-pitched gable (triangular) roofs that extend far out past the home’s exterior walls, often with exposed beams or rafters. Exterior details include a covered front porch, pillars lining the entry, and double hanging windows which have separate panes of glass on the top and bottom.
